Puerto Rican parrot pin made of hard enamel and polished gold.
The Puerto Rican Parrot also known as Iguaca by the Taíno Indians, is a species endemic to the archipelago of Puerto Rico. It is known that during pre-Columbian times the parrot was abundant, but it declined precipitously during the 1900s due to deforestation, predation, diseases, and poaching.
It is now considered an endangered species with only three wild populations, including the oldest group in El Yunque National Forest. The second group is in the Río Abajo State Forest and a third population was introduced into Maricao Commonwealth Forest. There’s an ongoing recovery program as an effort to conserve, protect and manage wild and captive parrots to downlist the species from endangered to threatened.
