Only a tree of great height could be the owner of such a leaf. The female yagrumo (Cecropia schreberiana) is a fast-growing tree that can reach up to 70 feet tall. Native to the West Indies, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, the yagrumo hembra has huge leaves 2.5 feet wide, enough to be used as a small umbrella. This tree flowers and fruits throughout the year.
Both its solid trunk and hollow branches can be used for multiple purposes. Its branches are used to create fishing nets and life preservers. Its most beautiful use? Musical. The wood of the female yagrumo is used to make the Puerto Rican cuatro.
