There is a surprising diversity of wildlife amidst the excess of buildings, cars, houses, and noise present in urban areas. The Guía de Biodiversidad Urbana functions as a field guide that provides the description, history, and photographs of each of these species. The guide includes 54 trees, 53 birds, 11 reptiles, 9 invertebrates, 9 mammals, and 6 amphibians.

The professor and author of the book, Rafael Joglar, mentions that: "Green areas in cities and urban forests represent places of ecological importance that should be made known and conserved. They contain spectacular flora and fauna, common, native and introduced (exotic) species, but also rare and endangered species".
